One of the most common questions I get before autumn photoshoots is: "What should we wear?" It's a great question — your outfit choices can make or break your photos. After years of photographing couples and families around Mount Fuji in autumn, I've developed a clear sense of what works beautifully and what doesn't.
The key to autumn outfit coordination is complementing nature, not competing with it. Here's what photographs best against Mount Fuji's autumn backdrop:
A midi or maxi dress in a warm neutral tone photographs beautifully, especially with movement. Think flowing fabrics that catch the autumn breeze. Pair with ankle boots, a wide-brim felt hat, and a cozy wrap or cardigan. Pro tip: A dress with long sleeves photographs more elegantly than sleeveless styles in autumn settings.
A well-fitted sweater over a collared shirt creates instant polish. Pair with chinos or dark jeans and leather boots. A tailored wool coat or a classic denim jacket adds layering options. Pro tip: Roll up sleeves slightly for a relaxed, natural look. It photographs better than stiff, formal poses.
The goal is coordination, not identical outfits. Choose 2–3 colors from the approved palette and distribute them across both outfits. For example: she wears a cream dress with a camel coat; he wears a navy sweater with camel chinos. The camel ties them together without being matchy.
Family photoshoots require a bit more planning, but the same principles apply:
Autumn mornings around Mount Fuji start cold (as low as 5°C / 41°F at sunrise) but can warm to 18°C (64°F) by midday. Layering isn't just stylish — it's essential for comfort.
A thin, fitted thermal or camisole that won't add bulk. For men, a fitted t-shirt or thin thermal under a shirt. This layer shouldn't be visible in photos.
This is what shows in your photos. Your dress, sweater, button-down, or main top. Choose something you feel confident and comfortable in.
A coat, jacket, or cardigan that can be worn for some shots and removed for others. This gives you two distinct looks. A classic wool coat, leather jacket, or cozy knit cardigan all work beautifully.
A warm puffer or heavy coat that you wear between shots but remove for photos. Keep this in the car or bag. This is purely for comfort, not photographs.
